Healing Fibromyalgia Naturally
by Jens Korgaard, D.C.
More and more women, especially between the ages 20 and 50 are getting
diagnosed with a conditions called Fibromyalgia, also known as fibrositis
or fibromyositis . Some of the symptoms include "tight" muscles
and fatigue especially in the morning, constant aches and pains "all
over". It is often associated with abdominal bloating and cramps, painful
menstruation, numbness of hands or feet, and headaches.
Fibromyalgia is usually very difficult to diagnose, since most symptoms
is easily discarded as a bad cold or flu. However the criteria for diagnosing
fibromyalgia is the existence of tender points found in the muscles. If
you have tenderness in at least 11 out of 18 of these spots, you probably
have fibromyalgia. It is interesting to note that one common feature is
sleep disturbances and that physical, emotional and chemical stress often
aggravates the symptoms. Although there are no known cures for fibromyalia,
I believe that it is possible to reduce or eliminate the symptoms using
natural means.
First start exercising. If you are too sore for exercise, start out very
slowly like walking or swimming a couple of minutes a day, and gradually
increase the level until you can do 20 minutes of moderate exercise. Also
try a Tai Chi or Chi Qong class.
Hopefully you are already taking a magnesium/Malic Acid supplement, studies
show that this combination is particular helpful in decreasing fibromyalgia
symptoms. Also taking copious amounts of vitamins, minerals and anti oxidants
is important. Other nutrients I recommend taking is DHEA, cat's claw, grape
seed extract, co-enzyme Q10, SAM (S-adeno-sylmethionine). Cetyl myristoleate
combined with other fatty acid esters in a mixture called Collastin has
also showed promising results in treating fibromyalgia. Taking melantonin
and St. Johns wort, valerian or chamomile can help you get the proper sleep.
Last but not least, bodywork is probably the most important component in
treating fibromyalgia. Walk, no run to your nearest subluxation based chiropractor.
Physical, emotional and chemical stress causes what we chiropractors call
subluxations or misalignments in the spine. When the spinal bones (vertebrae)
become misaligned they irritate or damage the spinal cord, spinal nerves,
fascia, meninges and other tissues. They thereby can alter the concentration
of enzymes and other chemicals necessary for skeletal muscle health which
may play a role in muscle disease. Clearly, if you are suffering from muscle
spasm, trigger points or fibrositis you should see a doctor of chiropractic
to make sure that your spine is free from vertebral subluxations.
Dr. Jens Korgaard practices in Newington, and specializes in Network Chiropractic
which combined the best of several chiropractic techniques. It is a safe
gentle, effective technique that restores proper spinal function, which
is critical to all healing.
