Many times parents are surprised when I tell them that alternative therapies are often more effective with children than adults. It has been estimated that most infants suffering from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), do so because of damage to the upper cervical (neck) region. This is due to traumatic birth processes which use forceps or vacuum instruments to deliver the baby as fast as possible. These injuries are seen much less when midwives are there to assist in the birthing process. In recent years there has been a significant drop in death from SIDS. This is largely due to the recommendation that an infant should be sleeping on their back instead of their stomach. My understanding is that when infants with misaligned vertebrae in their necks, are left on their stomachs an increased pressure on the spinal cord can occur. In some cases this may cause the infant to stop breathing. But what about the kids that do not suffer from SIDS ? Don't we need to be concerned about them? I feel that many of the ailments infants and children suffer from could be prevented if they were checked for this condition we chiropractors call Vertebral Subluxations ( a term used by chiropractors to describe blockages of the nerves along the spinal cord). Spinal abnormalities have been found in 95% of all kids who suffered from vomiting, hyperactivity and sleeplessness. In a research study from Denmark 94% of 316 infants suffering from infantile colic experienced satisfactory results with chiropractic care. Chiropractic care has shown to be beneficial in the following conditions: fever, croup, learning disorders, poor posture, nervousness, constipation, bed wetting, allergies, ear infections, sinus problems, skin disorders, scoliosis, colds, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, poor concentration and many more. Of course you would need to make sure that your Doctor of Chiropractic is familiar with gentle techniques to treat children.
